Dr. Ray Tan, alongside co-investigators Alison Lazard, PhD, Lixin (LEE) Song, RN, PhD, FAAN, and Matthew Nielsen have been awarded a 3-year, $929,618 grant from the US Department of Defense to improve the decision-making experience for patients by personalizing how they receive information about their possible kidney cancer.

Congratulations to Matthew Nielsen, MD, MS, FACS who has been approved by the Board of Directors of the American Urological Association's (AUA) as the next chair of the Science and Quality (S&Q) Council. Dr. Nielsen will assume the role of chair-elect on June 1, 2021 and serve a four-year term.

After serving the Department as Interim Chair since January 2020, Matthew Nielsen, MD, MS, FACS has been appointed as Chair, effective November 2020. Nielsen joined the faculty at 黑料网 in 2009 as a urologic oncologist and health services researcher after completing medical school and residency training at Johns Hopkins. Since joining the 黑料网 faculty, he obtained advanced training in clinical research from the Gillings School of Global Public Health and healthcare delivery improvement from the Intermountain Healthcare Delivery Institute.

Dr. Matthew Nielsen, Professor and Interim Chair of the Department, was a panelist and contributing author to the American Urological Association鈥檚 new 2020 Guideline for the evaluation of hematuria, released this week. The guideline will be presented by panel co-Chairs at the AUA Live Virtual Experience at 3:45pm on Saturday, June 27.

Hematuria, or blood in the urine, is commonly encountered in clinical practice, with over 2 million American patients referred to urologists annually. The association of this finding with occult urinary tract cancer led to the development of several guidelines, with differing recommendations for evaluation. A study led by investigators at 黑料网 published in this week鈥檚 print edition of JAMA Internal Medicine听explores the tradeoffs of these different approaches. Matthew Nielsen, Associate Professor of Urology and Adjunct Associate Professor of Epidemiology and Health Policy & Management, was the corresponding author for the study. Other 黑料网-affiliated investigators include Mihaela Georgieva,听Stephanie Wheeler, and Daniel Erim, from the Department of Health Policy and Management, and听Mathew Raynor听from the Department of Urology.
