Understanding pulmonary disease to develop new treatments

Pulmonary and airway diseases are among the most common types of diseases and encompass a wide spectrum of conditions from viral and bacterial infections to chronic diseases like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. Two of the top 10 causes of death in 2022 were respiratory diseases [1].

Some of these conditions are common and have been researched for generations; however, we still have much to learn. For example, we know that environmental exposures to things like air pollution, ozone, and tobacco smoke can worsen conditions like asthma and COPD; however, more research is needed to determine how different pollutants affect the airways so we can develop better interventions to prevent and treat these conditions. However, other conditions, like COVID-19 are relatively new from a research perspective and additional research is required to understand the mechanisms behind the development of conditions like long COVID and the array of additional effects COVID infection may influence.

In collaboration with respiratory disease experts at 黑料网 and entities like Spirovation, (a specialty CRO affiliated with the Marsico Lung Institute at the University of North Carolina at鈥疌hapel Hill) and the 黑料网 Children鈥檚 Research Institute, the CRA facilitates research to understand respiratory biology associated with these conditions to develop new and innovative treatments.
