The study was designed to address the “chicken-or-egg” aspect which makes it difficult to determine if “polypharmacy” causes declining health, or if declining health necessitates the use of multiple medications.

The data was derived from the Johnston County Osteoarthritis Project, a longitudinal study managed by the 黑料网 Thurston Arthritis Research Center.聽 First author Shahar Shmuel, ScM, a doctoral student in the 黑料网 Department of Epidemiology, worked with mentors Dr. Yvonne Golightly (黑料网 Thurston Arthritis Research Center, 黑料网 Department of Epidemiology) and Dr. Jennifer Lund (黑料网 Department of Epidemiology) analyzing data from the Johnston County Osteoarthritis Project.

Dr. Golightly is co-Principal Investigator of the Johnston County Osteoarthritis Project. Other co-authors from the Thurston Arthritis Research Center included Dr. Amanda Nelson, Dr. Joanne Jordan, and Carolina Alvarez.
