Two original research articles have been published by the Burn Center Lab.
First, it was just announced that the PhD Doctoral Thesis work of Crystal Neely, under the direction of Dr. Bruce Cairns and Dr. Rob Maile, has just been accepted for publication with PLoS ONE. PLoS ONE is a very well recognized journal that features reports of original research from all disciplines within science and medicine. This paper is titled “Flagellin treatment prevents increased susceptibility to systemic bacterial infection after burn injury by inhibiting anti-inflammatory IL-10+IL-12-neutrophil polarization”. The authors of this study are Crystal J Neely PhD, Laurel B Kartchner, April E Mendoza MD, Brandon M Linz, Jeffrey A Frelinger PhD, Matthew C Wolfgang PhD, Robert Maile PhD and Bruce A Cairns MD and represents the strong collaboration with the Burn Center and the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. It investigates why burn patients are so susceptible to bacterial infection and suggests a new therapeutic target.
In addition, “Burn injury induces high levels of phosphorylated insulin-like growth factor binding protein-1” has been just published in International Journal of Burns and Trauma. This work provides another clue as to why burn patients are so immune suppressed. The authors of this paper were April E Mendoza MD, Laura A Maile PhD, Bruce A Cairns MD and Robert Maile PhD.
