How to make a referral to the PPIU:

To complete the referral, we will need the patient’s insurance information and clinical information. The clinical information can be notes from any outpatient provider. Ìý

Once reviewed by our team, our coordinator will be in contact with you about potential admission dates. We are often able to admit patients into the hospital within a week of the referral. Ìý

When preparing for your admission, please take care to follow our permitted item list:Ìý

PPIU Admission Items Ìý

You may keep 5 outfits (5 tops/5 bottoms), 5 sets of undergarments (5 tops/5 bottoms), and 5 pairs of socks in your room.  Please do not bring belts/suspenders or clothing items with drawstrings, as these items are not allowed on the unit.  Ìý

For your comfort, you may wish to bring at least one pair of pants/jeans and a sweater/ sweatshirt, as the temperature on the unit sometimes gets cool.  Ìý

For footwear, please bring shoes without laces.       Ìý

The unit has toiletries, but you are welcome to bring your own.  Exceptions include:  aerosols, items containing alcohol, glass containers/items (e.g., mirrors), scissors, and nail clippers.  Ìý

We encourage you to bring photos (not in frames) of your baby/babies and other loved ones.  Ìý

You may bring one small blanket and one pillow from home.   Ìý

Please limit the number of valuables you bring (e.g., money, cell phones, Ipads, and other electronic devices).  In order to protect patient privacy and ensure confidentiality, personal cell phones are not allowed on the unit.  Ìý

In addition to the guidelines above, we politely request that you refrain from bringing the following items:   Ìý

  • Electronic devices and/or devices with cords  Ìý

  • Metal cans Ìý
  • Over-the counter medications/supplements Ìý
  • Plastic bags Ìý
  • Prescription medications  Ìý
  • Tobacco or nicotine products  Ìý
  • °Â±ð²¹±è´Ç²Ô²õ Ìý

 

For patients from out of town:

When possible, we recommend the patient’s family and infant travel to Chapel Hill, NC for the duration of the hospitalization. This allows the patient to have frequent visitation with the infant and for the treatment team to meet the family in person. Ìý
