About

Dr. Bradley Gaynes a Professor of Psychiatry and Epidemiology, Director of the Division of Global Mental Health, and co-Director of the Department of Psychiatry’s Physician Scientist Training Program. His research focuses on the development and implementation of evidence-based management strategies to treat mental illness, with an emphasis on large scale clinical trials and health services research. He is an expert in measurement based-care depression management using pharmacologic and cognitive behavioral interventions, like the Friendship Bench. His efforts combine clinical trials expertise and the use of evidence-based treatment algorithms for managing depressive illness in non-psychiatric medical settings. He is nationally and internationally recognized for his clinical and research efforts on integrating mental health and primary care and translating evidence-based psychiatric care into real-world non-psychiatric settings. His current focus is on disseminating evidence-based psychiatric interventions in HIV settings in low- and middle-income countries. In 2022, he became the Hayworth Distinguished Professor of Mood Disorders at the University of North Carolina, and he received the Senior Scholar Health Services Research Award from the American Psychiatric Association, recognizing a career of sustained research accomplishments in mental health.

Most recently, he was the senior author on two systematic reviews published in JAMA (June 2023) that supported the U.S Preventive Services Task Force in their recommendations for routine screening for depression and suicide risk, and for anxiety.
