Scientists Elucidate How DREADD Technology Highjacks Neuronal Activity

The Bryan Roth lab got some nice press for their recent Nature paper, revealing structural details of his chemogenetic technology called DREADD 鈥 designer receptors exclusively activated by designer drugs - that recognize drug-like but physiologically inert compounds. Postdoc Shicheng Zhang, PhD, led this research published in Nature.

The Roth Lab and collaborators from UC San Francisco, Yale, Duke, and Stanford developed a new compound that hits the same brain cell target as psychedelic drugs, triggering long-lasting anti-depressant action without psychedelic effects in mice. Kuglae Kim is co-first author of the Nature paper.
