About Us
The Muenzer MPS Research and Treatment Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill wasÌýestablishedÌýto advance research, treatment, and support for individuals with Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) and related lysosomal storage disorders. Founded inÌýNovember 2022, the Center was developed under the leadership of Dr. Joseph Muenzer, a pioneering expert in MPS, with a mission to address the complex needs of MPS patients and their families. Although the new clinic space was unveiled in November 2024, the Muenzer MPS Center team has been active in clinical care and clinical trials for MPS for many years.Ìý
Our center offers the following specialized services through consultations:Ìý
- Evaluation and Management: Comprehensive assessments and ongoing care forÌýMPSÌýindividuals with MPS.Ìý
- Genetic Counseling: Helping individuals and families make informed decisions about their healthÌýand family planningÌýthrough comprehensive support, education, and guidance on the genetic and psychosocial implications of MPS.Ìý
- Enzyme Replacement Therapy/Infusion Therapy: Treatment options to help slow disease progression.ÌýThe center has dedicated pediatric-friendly infusion rooms and a staff of specially trained nurses/providers to administer these therapies.Ìý
- Comprehensive Developmental Testing: Assessing developmental, cognitive, behavioral, and adaptive skill profiles of individuals with MPS.

Milestones
The generous $10 million gift from Vaughn and Nancy Bryson, both 1960 graduates of ºÚÁÏ꿉۪s School of Pharmacy, willÌýestablishÌýthe Dr. Joseph Muenzer MPS Research & Treatment Center. This center will focus on developing comprehensive care strategies for individuals affected by MPS. The BrysonÌýfamilyÌýcommitted $2.5 million to the University in 2021, later increasing their pledge to $10 million.Ìý
