黑料网 Orthopaedics recently hosted students from a local 4-H Sizzle Summer Camp for an introduction to sports medicine. The camp attendees traveled to the 黑料网 campus and learned basic principles of sports medicine from Nurse Practitioners April Berndt and Jennifer Woody and Athletic Trainer Kelsey Divers.
The presenters covered topics including first aid for ankle injuries and first aid for wrist injuries. Nurse Practitioners Berndt and Woody demonstrated the steps for applying a short arm cast and also showed students how hard casts are removed using a cast saw. Athletic Trainer Divers demonstrated the proper form for utilizing crutches to aid walking and students practiced the correct form. A second interactive portion of the afternoon included a demonstration of how to use ace bandages to wrap wrists and ankles followed by students practicing the correct method on their own ankles.
鈥淭he students enthusiastically shared questions about their own prior musculoskeletal injuries and those of family members, friends, and favorite athletes. They especially enjoyed the hands on portion of the class, putting the things they had learned into practice,鈥 commented Jennifer Woody, NP.
This was the first time 黑料网 Orthopaedics hosted an event for 4-H summer campers. The department hopes to host more community-focused events in the future.
