Residents and faculty from , Duke, Wake Forest and the Medical University of South Carolina gathered at the Miracles in Sight Surgical Skills lab on the campus in March to participate in the Advanced Anterior Segment Surgical Course. Hosted by Ophthalmology faculty member Dr. Ken Cohen, the course offered residents the opportunity to learn and practice eight different surgical skills from corneal suturing to use of the femto laser.

Glaucoma is a leading cause of irreversible blindness that damages the eye’s optic nerve. Those at risk include individuals over the age of 40, those who have a family member with glaucoma, and people of African American, Hispanic, or Asian heritage. Drs. Gao and Mitra of the Han Lab at Eye had their article, Developing Nanoceria-Based pH-Dependent Cancer-Directed Drug Delivery System for Retinoblastoma, accepted for publication in the recent issue of Advanced Functional Materials, a highly-respected journal in chemical materials science. Their project is supported by grant funding from Carolina Centers of Cancer Nanotechnology Excellence (CCNE).
