Dr. Kathy Whitfield, Assistant Professor of Pediatric Ophthalmology, recently served as a visiting professor at the Tianjin Eye Hospital in Tianjin, China. Dr. Whitfield was also a speaker at the 2019 Tianjin International Ophthalmology Forum. Dr. Whitfield is pictured with colleague Grace Prakalapakorn, M.D., from Duke, and local ophthalmology students.

Dr. Nik Ulrich of ºÚÁÏÍø Ophthalmology accepts a check for $4,000 from Lion Dale Dupree of the North Carolina Lions. Funds donated by the Lions will be used for travel to China to treat infants born with retinopathy of prematurity and for cornea research being conducted at ºÚÁÏÍø Ophthalmology.

Four ºÚÁÏÍø residents attended the 15th Annual Harvard Ophthalmology Intensive Cataract Surgical Training Course with ºÚÁÏÍø Ophthalmologist Ken Cohen, an invited faculty member. Dr. Cohen lectured on the White Cataract/Poor Red Reflex and trained 130 residents from across the United States on corneal suturing. ºÚÁÏÍø Ophthalmology third-year residents Dr. Lee Moore and Dr. Mike Taggart accompanied ºÚÁÏÍø faculty member Dr. Ken Cohen to San Jose de los Llanos, a rural province of the Dominican Republic, to provide eye care to local residents. They examined 500 patients and performed 110 surgeries, assisting citizens who have minimal access to vision care. The week-long trip was organized by the Hawaiian Eye Foundation.
