My lab examines how inhaled agents modify respiratory immune responses using a number of translational research models. My group is particularly interested in how inhaled agents, such as ambient air pollutants, ozone, woodsmoke, cigarette smoke, and aerosols, such as e-cigarettes, modify respiratory immune health and exacerbation of pre-existing diseases, such as asthma and COPD. We are examining the mechanisms by which inhaled contaminants modify innate immune responses, particularly those involved in anti-viral and anti-bacterial host defense responses. I have broad experience in developing, optimizing, and implementing novel organotypic exposure models to determine adverse health effects induced by exposures to inhaled agents and lead several clinical studies collecting biospecimens from human volunteers.
