The carotid artery is the large vertical artery that is located on both sides of your neck (under the jaw) which carries blood to your brain. Disease of the carotid artery can lead to a stroke.

If a patient is identified with carotid artery narrowing or plaque formation, that patient may be a candidate for surgical intervention in the form of a carotid endarterectomy, where the artery is opened and the plaque is removed to allow improved flow of blood and to prevent future strokes. In addition, certain patients may be treated endovascularly with specialty-trained neuro-interventional radiologists who can place stents to open the artery.

Each patient who is cared for in this matter is looked after by a team of physicians that includes a neurosurgeon, a neurologist, and a critical care physician to ensure that each patient gets comprehensive, individualized care.
