2025 Annual Weatherspoon Symposium
March 5 @ 7:00 am - 6:00 pm
The tragic loss of Van and Kay’s son to a brain tumor at the age of 28 highlights the Weatherspoon family’s dedication to supporting brain tumor research. In response to this loss, they have established multiple professorships and research funds at ºÚÁÏÍø Health, contributing over $10 million over time, particularly for the brain tumor program. The second Weatherspoon Brain Tumor Symposium is made possible by the generosity of the Weatherspoon funds.
Objectives
- Explore key concepts in stem cell biology, molecular genetics, and immune factors influencing glioblastoma and other brain cancers, and examine how these insights can drive therapeutic discovery and personalized treatment strategies.
- Review the latest advancements in immunotherapy (including CAR-T and NK cells), radiation therapy, and novel treatments targeting tumor metabolism, neurotransmitter receptors, and epigenetic silencing, with a focus on glioblastoma.
- Examine the role of tumor profiling, biomarkers, and advanced imaging techniques (e.g., perfusion imaging, focused ultrasound) in optimizing patient care, guiding treatment decisions, and improving outcomes for brain tumor patients.
- Discuss the holistic management of glioma patients, including healthcare factors affecting patient experience, the role of palliative care, and the challenges in managing complications like venous thromboembolic disease
