We are so excited to showcase some of our brilliant UME educators in the Department of Medicine and across our AHEC sites. For many of us there are certain teachers in our past who left a mark on our lives and are highly valued. For some they may be the reason you went into medicine or the specialty you are in. The DOM along with the AHEC sites have many highly regarded educators who are closely involved in teaching and mentoring our students. Thus, we want to feature some of our educators so that we can all get to know them better. 聽

Education Role

I am the course director for HISC medicine and the associate campus director for the ILM branch campus (Wilmington). My primary job is teaching medical students on the inpatient wards and doing the core lectures for medicine (diagnostic/therapeutic reasoning, ECGs, CXRs).

I went to NCSSM in Durham and then 黑料网 for undergrad and medical school. I have always enjoyed teaching 鈥 it is rewarding to help others learn and it helps you master the material yourself. I tutored chemistry as an undergrad and then did several of my medical school clinical rotations in Wilmington. Wilmington was a good fit and I鈥檝e been here pretty much ever since!

From my own experience at 黑料网, I understand how important the AHEC sites are for medical education. I think we offer an excellent clinical experience and a good opportunity to learn outside of the tertiary environment.聽 At the same time it is very important for us to ensure a substantially identical experience to what central campus offers (clinical log, didactics, etc.).聽 With new leadership in Chapel Hill, the branch campuses have been more effectively integrated into the School of Medicine as a whole.

Advice To Students

One of the objectives/expectations for HISC medicine is to 鈥渢hink for yourself.鈥 This is actually really important. One of the great things about medicine is that, with a solid medical knowledge foundation, you can reason through most clinical encounters and determine a good management plan. Along with a strong knowledge base, history is so, so important.聽 I try to emphasize to students the importance of talking with a patient at their level, getting a thorough history (including medications!), and using all the great resources we now have in the EMR to enhance the history.聽 With a good history and fundamental knowledge, you can manage most problems.聽 And if more help is needed, that鈥檚 why we have specialists!

My advice (to students) in the clinical realm is to not worry and not be anxious (easier said than done!).聽 Get out there and see a lot of patients.聽 Don鈥檛 worry about making mistakes 鈥 we all do and that鈥檚 how we learn.聽 Focus on caring for the patient in front of you as best you can and everything else will work out fine.

Hobbies and Activities

I enjoy spending time with my wife, two wonderful daughters (12 鈥 7th grade and 15 鈥 10th grade), and two dogs Charlie (golden retriever) and Mailey (Labrador retriever). It鈥檚 really important to stay fit as we get older. I like to run and my younger daughter is a pretty good cross country runner. I am a coach of her cross country team and she consistently finishes in the top 5 in the county at middle school meets.聽 We ran the Novant half marathon together last February (she beat me).M
