
The 2021 Richard H. Whitehead was held virtually August 4. Ana Felix, MBBCh, FAAN, assistant professor in the division of general medicine and clinical epidemiology, presented the annual lecture.

Christopher Klipstein, MD, professor of medicine in general medicine and clinical epidemiology, and director of the
Internal Medicine Clerkship, received the Hyman L. Battle Distinguished Excellence in Teaching Award in the Clinical Sciences. This award was established in1985 to recognize exceptional teaching in the clinical curriculum. Faculty members were nominated and selected by the Class of 2020.
Klipstein also received the Best Application Phase Course Award, established in 1985 by the third-year class to recognize the clinical courses that most significantly contributed to the education of third-year medical students.

Residents Edwin Lu, MD, John Barber, MD, and De-Vaughn Williams, MD, received Kaiser Permanente Excellence in Teaching Awards.聽 These awards were created by the Class of 2000 to recognize residents and interns who contribute in an exemplary way to the education of medical students with their enthusiasm for teaching, including students in patient care decisions, and promoting involvement of students on the medical team.

Koyal Jain, MD, MPH, FASN, assistant professor in the division of nephrology and hypertension, director of the nephrology and hypertension training program, and director of undergraduate medical education for the Department of Medicine, received the Hyman L. Battle Distinguished Excellence in Teaching Award in the Foundation Phase. The award was established in 1985 to recognize exemplary teaching in the pre-clinical curriculum. Faculty members are nominated, and the recipient is selected, by last year鈥檚 second-year medical students.
Jain also received the Foundation Phase Outstanding Director Teaching Award, which recognizes a faculty member from the Foundation Phase curriculum who has enhanced the education of second-year medical students by fostering a collegial environment that supports and encourages excellence.
And, Jain received the Best Foundation Phase Block Award, with Emily Moorefield, PhD, in the Department of Cell Biology and Physiology, which recognizes a block from the Foundation Phase curriculum that contributed in an effective manner to the education of second-year medical students.
