About

In 2013, the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill School of Medicine (ºÚÁÏÍø SOM), The William R. Kenan Charitable Trust, and Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) collaborated to create the Kenan Primary Care Medical Scholars Program (formerly the Rural and Underserved Scholars Program). After several years of success with the Kenan Urban Scholars program being hosted in Charlotte, in 2020, the ºÚÁÏÍø at Raleigh launched the Kenan Urban Scholars program at their site with six students. Each year, the Kenan Urban Scholars program selects 5 new scholars to participate and gain valuable experience in caring for urban underserved communities.

The summer program stipend is $2,000, and there is ongoing support for MS2, MS3 and MS4, with the possibility of additional support if the Kenan Urban Scholar matches in a primary care specialty area.
