About

Dr. Mann was born in 1935 in Pensacola, FL; however, he spent much of his formative years in Monroe, NC, with his parents and four siblings. His father was an insurance salesman and his mother a schoolteacher. His parents instilled the importance of education and good work ethic in him and his siblings at a young age. In his household, college was an expectation-not an option. So, he enrolled and attended Tennessee State University, earning his B.S. in Chemistry. At Tennessee State University, he excelled academically, pledged Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, INC, and joined the Air Force ROTC. He was in the upper ranks of his class, graduating as a commissioned officer with the qualifications to be a U.S Air Force pilot. In 1956, after graduating, he had two options: military or medical school. He decided to defer his military commitment for four years to pursue medicine. Later that year, he matriculated at the University of North Carolina Medical School. He credits his parents and hometown physician for his decision. During medical school, he continued to excel. His wife, church family, and study group were support sources. Post-graduation, he completed an internal medicine residency at Fitzsimons General Hospital, a military hospital and training facility. He moved to the Offutt Air Force base and continued to progress in the military. He ultimately retired three years later as a major. After military retirement, he completed a two-year GI fellowship at The University of Colorado. He practiced gastroenterology for approximately 30 years at a hospital-based practice in the Denver metropolitan area and co-owned a private practice. He became involved in administrative medicine, serving in roles such as chief medical officer and chief of staff for the hospital. In his roles, he was instrumental in restructuring the medical department. He retired from medicine in 1996. Since then, he has continued to be an active member of his fraternity, volunteers in his community, and enjoys creating memories with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
