Project Charter
The project charter is a document that structures the work and essentially provides a roadmap for the project so that there is shared vision. Key components of this document typically include the following: project purpose and goal; family of measures; project scope; key stakeholders including the project team and executive sponsor; and a high-level timeline for milestones and deliverables. Although the project charter is completed before the project begins, it is considered a 鈥渓iving document鈥 that can be edited as the project progresses.
Key Steps
- Gather information (e.g. literature, system performance data, etc), about your problem so that you can clearly articulate the issue being addressed, why it matters, and the expected impact of your improvement work.
- Populate the project charter with the best information you have available
- Review the document with the executive sponsor and other key stakeholders to build awareness, confirm the details, and get endorsement for the project
- As the charter is a “living document”, update as changes occur in the improvement project team and organization.
