Carolina Engagement WeekThe CPL team contributed multiple sessions to Carolina Engagement Week 2024 in collaboration with our community partners, including:

Presentation at Habitat for Humanity International Conference

Kevin Giff presenting at HFHI conference in March 2024CPL Community Program Specialist Kevin Giff presented alongside Laine Staton, vice president of homeowner services for , at Habitat for Humanity International’s biannual conference in Atlanta in March. Their presentation was titled Integrating Community Development and Engagement into the DNA of Your Affiliate.” The presentation shared insights on community engagement process that CPL and Habitat Orange have been developing. Kevin and Laine also discussed actions that other affiliates can take to improve or expand community engagement in organizational practices. The conference hosted Habitat affiliates from around the world to learn, collaborate, and exchange best practices.

HOPE NC’s IDEAL Communities initiative entered Year 3

Grosvenor Gardens Apartments in RaleighCPL partners with to support the IDEAL Communities initiative. IDEAL Communities aims to create communities where people with disabilities and older adults can thrive. In 2022, HOPE launched the IDEAL Communities initiative to bring together a diverse group of partners and self-advocates to advocate for more inclusive, safe, affordable housing opportunities in the Triangle. HOPE is making huge progress towards achieving these goals, including supporting the integration of 10 inclusive apartments in Grosvenor Gardens, a historic apartment community in downtown Raleigh. As the CPL prepares to support HOPE in the third year of IDEAL Communities, we’re excited to further test the model, expand the initiative’s reach, and support advocacy for more inclusive housing opportunities.

Presentation at Southeast AHEC Geriatric Conference on Healthy Aging

CPL Primary Lead Dr. Ryan Lavalley presents "Promoting Dignity in the Aging Client"CPL Primary Lead Dr. Ryan Lavalley presented at the 3rd Annual South East Geriatric Conference on Healthy Aging on April 1. Lavalley’s presentation, “Promoting Dignity in the Aging Client,” shared best practices for dignity and optimism with older adult care. Hosted by the N.C. Southeast Area Health Education Center, the South East Geriatric Conference on Healthy Aging offers continuing education for public health workers and community practitioners. The 2024 conference focused on how best to deliver advanced, best practice care to the aged client while promoting safety and dignity.

CPL Community Program Specialist Kevin Giff with Fairview youth environmental internsThe CPL Community Engagement Team continued working with the Fairview Community Watch throughout the spring semester. Kevin and CPL Community Engagement Fellow Sayoko Kawabata consistently participated in small but important community happenings such as trash pick-up, a community garden celebration, workshops, and intensive meetings. One highlight was Fairview’s environmental workshops, sponsored by and other partners, in which the CPL supported Fairview youth in advocating for environmental issues important to them.
