In summer 2019, the Department of Allied Health Science (DAHS), in partnership with , the , and the , will host the inaugural , a week-long skills camp for young adults with intellectual disabilities to enjoy campus at ºÚÁÏÍø-Chapel Hill, to build skills for adult life, and to set goals for a bright future. The program is an initiative of HEELS 2 Transition, an overarching interdisciplinary program.
The HEELS Summer Intensive, supported by TEACCH’s structured learning approach, addresses critical areas of transition to adulthood, including executive functioning and goal setting, career exploration, independent living skills, and safety. Participants will also practice life skills in the Division of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy training apartment in preparation for increased independence. Participants learn approaches to support performance of activities including cleaning, laundry, kitchen safety, and self-care.
This skills camp is now accepting applications. Director of the HEELS Summer Intensive, Dara Chan, ScD, CRC, is an assistant professor in the Division of Clinical Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling. Chan will facilitate the career exploration component.
