Karl Shpargel, PhD

Dr. Karl Shpargel has been promoted to Associate Professor in the Department of Genetics, effective January 1, 2022.

Dr. Shpargel received his B.S. in Biology, Genetics and Developmental Biology from Pennsylvania State University in 1999 followed by his Ph.D. in Genetics from Case Western Reserve University in 2006.聽 Dr. Shpargel served as a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Bruce Trapp at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation (2006-2007), where he studied endotoxin-induced factors that initiate microglial neuroprotection.聽 He moved to 黑料网 Chapel Hill to join the laboratory of Dr. Terry Magnuson (Department of Genetics) as a postdoctoral fellow in 2008, where he studied histone demethylase function in cardiovascular epigenetics.聽 In 2013, he was appointed Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Genetics at 黑料网 and has expanded his study of histone demethylase function in development and disease.聽 Dr. Shpargel鈥檚 lab continues to expand and he was recently awarded an R01 from NIDCR for his project titled 鈥淓nhancer activation mechanisms in cranial neural crest osteoblast differentiation鈥.聽 Congratulations to Dr. Shpargel!
