The 黑料网 Science Expo, hosted by the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center, is a signature event of the annual North Carolina Science Festival featuring more than 100 booths staffed by 黑料网-Chapel Hill students, researchers, practitioners, and community volunteers, hands-on activities and games, science demonstrations, behind-the-scenes lab tours, and more! ABGS enjoyed distributing general genetics educational resources, like our comics, and gathering insight and interest on these materials and our study.

The Black Family Wellness Expo, hosted by Southeast Raleigh YMCA; and the Raleigh (NC), Durham (NC) and Triangle Park (NC) Chapters of The Links, Incorporated, included screenings for blood pressure, cancer, cholesterol. hearing & speech, mental health, and heart health as well as fitness classes, interview/career/job training and employment opportunities for qualified candidates, healthy snacks, giveaways, and more! ABGS enjoyed distributing general genetics educational resources, like our comics, and gathering insight and interest on these materials and our study.

The event was hosted by the United Tribes of NC and will its mission was to continue to promote educational, economic, religious, charitable, and cultural activities for American Indian people. While tabling, we enjoyed distributing general genetics educational resources, gathering interest for our caregiver interviews, and getting to connect with tribal leaders, new people, and organizations. We also reported back on results from surveys conducted during the 2024 Unity Conference (see poster below).

We look forward to attending the Unity Conference again next year!

We loved hearing about everyone鈥檚 knowledge and opinions of genetic screening and genomic medicine and research as well as answering questions about our project. The event also showcased and celebrated the history and enduring legacy of historically black colleges and universities from across the state and region as well as hosted workshops covering topics such as financial literacy, FAFSA assistance, ACT test preparation, and more!

At this event we engaged in general genetics and genomics education with over 100 Louisburg residents as well as connected with partner organizations that serve rural communities to expand our network and reach to this population. This will help us hear from populations in rural settings, ensuring we meet their unique needs on our quest to make genetic screening widely available and accessible to everyone!

In addition, our team loved dancing with the Quincea帽eras, tasting from the various food trucks, and admiring the art tent with the community!

We loved hearing about everyone’s knowledge and opinions of genetic screening and genomic medicine and research as well as answering questions about our project. This fair also featured health services like flu shots, blood pressure, and blood sugar screenings and giveaways like free food, dental hygiene kits, school supplies, and more.

We loved hearing from the attendees from the Hispanic/Latine community in Charlotte about what they have heard about genetics and answering any questions they had for us. It was also amazing to meet all the wonderful community groups that were present and the meaningful work that they do!

At this event we were excited to have the chance to talk to families in the Louisburg area and table alongside other vendors including those who were providing screenings (e.g. dental, blood pressure checks), general care (haircut) and food distribution. It was also amazing to learn about the perspectives of the community members on genetics and genetic screening as well as meeting community leaders.
