{"id":14974,"date":"2022-05-06T11:12:29","date_gmt":"2022-05-06T15:12:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/fammed\/?page_id=14974"},"modified":"2023-12-26T22:10:09","modified_gmt":"2023-12-27T03:10:09","slug":"curriculum","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/fammed\/education\/fellows\/sports-medicine-fellowship\/about\/curriculum\/","title":{"rendered":"Curriculum, Conferences, and Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Training includes several longitudinal and rotation-based educational experiences designed to provide our fellows with critical, high-yield educational content necessary for success in their careers and on their Sports Medicine Certification Examinations.<\/p>\n<h2>Curriculum<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Fellowship boot camp \u2013 Over the first two weeks, faculty provide a high-yield review of critical topics in Sports Medicine with a focus on emergency management and other subjects relevant to event coverage.<\/li>\n<li>Fellows\u2019 ultrasound course \u2013 Held jointly with other local fellowship programs, this course serves to introduce basic concepts of musculoskeletal ultrasound and begin building proficiency for diagnostic and procedural guidance applications.<\/li>\n<li>Weekly didactic conference \u2013 Held every Thursday, sessions alternate between expert faculty and staff lecturers and current fellows delivering their own talks on assigned high-yield sports medicine topics, with dedicated board preparation sessions interspersed.<\/li>\n<li>Longitudinal experiences \u2013 Throughout the year, fellows consistently spend time at <a href=\"https:\/\/cfpsm.com\/\">Carolina Family Practice and Sports Medicine<\/a>,\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/campushealth.unc.edu\/services\/sports-medicine-orthopedics-physical-therapy\">Campus Health Sports Medicine<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/fammed\/sports-medicine\/\">黑料网 Family Medicine Sports Medicine<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.med.unc.edu\/ortho\/\">黑料网 Orthopaedics<\/a>, and 1 day\/week of clinic of their primary specialty.<\/li>\n<li>Subspecialty rotations \u2013 Fellows spend 2-4 half days\/week on subspecialty rotations which change every 4 weeks, including Sports Orthopaedic Surgery (includes operating room experiences), Musculoskeletal Procedures, Hand, Foot and Ankle, Spine (operative and non-operative), Musculoskeletal Radiology, Research, Physical Therapy, Strength and Conditioning, Sports Nutrition and more!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Conferences<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amssm.org\/Conferences.php\">AMSSM<\/a> Fellows Research and Leadership Conference \u2013 Each July, fellows attend this 4-day national conference which focuses on developing research skills and leadership in Sports Medicine while making connections with fellows and faculty from across the country.<\/li>\n<li>Conference of the Carolinas \u2013 Held jointly with <a href=\"https:\/\/prismahealth.org\/practices\/steadman-hawkins\">Steadman Hawkins Annual Sports Medicine Symposium<\/a> and alternating annually between Chapel Hill, NC and Greenville, SC, this regional meeting of faculty and fellows from North and South Carolina provides an intimate setting to dive deeply into relevant Sports Medicine topics of the day and connect with regional colleagues.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amssm.org\/Conferences.php\">AMSSM<\/a> Annual Meeting \u2013 The premier national conference for Primary Care Sports Medicine, fellows attend the AMSSM Annual Meeting to receive exceptional educational content and make clinical and research presentations to a national audience.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acsm.org\/annual-meeting\/annual-home\">ACSM Annual Meeting and World Congresses<\/a> &#8211; This annual conference showcases the latest in exercise science and sports medicine. Fellows have the opportunity to liaise with international leaders across a broad array of disciplines in the field.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Research<\/h2>\n<p>A core element of subspecialty training and required by the ACGME, through access to a broad range of faculty as well as broader university and community resources, our fellows attend the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amssm.org\/Conferences.php\">AMSSM<\/a> Fellows Research and Leadership Conference, participate in research projects suited to their interests and often present their findings at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amssm.org\/Conferences.php\">AMSSM<\/a> Annual Meeting.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Training includes several longitudinal and rotation-based educational experiences designed to provide our fellows with critical, high-yield educational content necessary for success in their careers and on their Sports Medicine Certification Examinations.
