黑料网 Health employee Nini has struggled with her health and weight her “whole life,” and her desire to improve her health increased after developing diabetes while pregnant. After trying to lose weight on her own without success, Nini decided to try the聽黑料网 Weight Management Program聽at Family Medicine.

While working one-on-one with a counselor to make and meet nutrition and exercise goals, Nini saw her weight consistently drop and health markers, like A1C, improve. Nini lost 25 lbs while working with the weight management program and another 10 lbs as she continued to apply the principles and habits she had learned on her own. She is now maintaining a healthy weight with the added benefits of getting off heartburn medication and having more energy.

When considering what made her experience so successful, Nini reflects that her counselor helped her set realistic goals that fit in with her life and her family. She really appreciated the individualized approach and how her counselor collaborated with her each visit to problem solve and set goals.

“It’s not forcing you to stay on a diet, [it’s just] overall helping you to think how to be healthy,” she explains. For her, the behavior change and subsequent weight loss felt “natural,” because the program helped her “gradually change [her] mind.” She notes the psychological aspects of the program helped her develop thinking patterns and a mindset that improved other areas of her life, too.

The Weight Management Program at Family Medicine has served over 180 healthcare employees since its inception in 2015. New members join via attending an orientation session, after which they can choose to engage in individual counseling, group counseling, or both. Any employee with a BMI 鈮25 and willingness to make changes to their daily routine can participate.

Several providers from the Weight Management Program recently published an article on building a viable weight management program in a patient-centered medical home. Eligible participants completed at least four WMP visits and had a baseline weight, blood pressure, and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) recorded within 1 year prior to their first visit. Paired t tests were used to assess changes in, weight, HbA1c and systolic and diastolic blood pressures from baseline. Participants saw an average weight decrease during program participation of 9.7 lbs (P<.001), an average decrease in HbA1c of 0.2 points (P=.004), and an average blood pressure reduction of 2.8 mmHg systolic (P=.002) and 1.9 mmHg diastolic (P=.03). One-third of participants (n=60) achieved clinically significant weight loss (>5%) at 18 months. Through their evaluation, the team concluded that the WMP provides one model for primary care practices to develop a financially sustainable and evidence-based behavioral therapy weight management program for their patients with obesity. Future work will include assessment of longer-term program benefits, quality metrics, and health care costs. To read the article, visit:

The 黑料网 Weight Management program is partnering with Principal Investigator, Dr. Rachel Goode from the 黑料网 School of Social Work and the Living F.R.E.E. Lab, to determine if an 8-week cognitive-behavioral binge eating intervention known as Appetite Awareness Treatment (AAT) has the potential to reduce binge eating and prevent weight gain for Black women who report weekly binge eating episodes and have a BMI over 30. Participants randomly assigned to the intervention group will participate in a 16-week group: 8 weeks of AAT followed by 8 weeks of the Weight Management Program curriculum. Those randomly assigned to the control group will remain on a waitlist for the duration of the study with the opportunity to receive 4 weeks of AAT and/or enroll in the Weight Management Program once the study is complete. At 3 and 6 months, we will examine changes in binge eating and weight for participants in the intervention and the control group. The results of this study will provide additional evidence on the potential of AAT to prevent and treat obesity in Black women. For more information visit:

Studies estimate that healthier diets among North Carolinians might may prevent $71 billion per year in medical costs, lost productivity, and premature deaths associated with poor diet. North Carolina communities, particularly in rural areas, face the dual challenge of high rates of chronic disease (obesity, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer) and economic decline.

A 2018 study led by researchers at 黑料网-Chapel Hill and NC State University gave a weekly allotment of locally grown vegetables to low-income, high-risk patients at The 黑料网 Family Medicine Center, in addition to connecting them with existing nutrition education programs. Researchers are examining changes in patient diet and biometric measures, as well as the impact on farmers. Laurel Sisler, WMP Director, served as the project manager for this research study. Once published, data will be shared here.

Bridget calls herself a 鈥渟uccess in progress鈥 and notes that sustainable weight loss takes time. She chose not to weigh herself regularly during the program, but she could tell that she was losing weight and clothes were fitting more loosely. She credits the Weight Management group as a source of motivation during her most exhausting weeks. 鈥淣ext week is a new week. I can do better. We may fall off the wagon and remembering that helped get back on.鈥

When asked what she would say to someone who is considering joining the program, Bridget says, 鈥淏e patient and enjoy the ride.鈥 Her favorite part of the program is attending group sessions to hear and learn from other people鈥檚 success, failures, trials, and errors, as well as to share her own. Cauliflower that is supposed to taste like fried chicken!
