
The Rural Residency Planning and Development Program () has been recognized with the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) Innovative Program Award. This honor highlights the program’s significant contributions to rural healthcare education and its impact on communities across the nation.
Program Achievements and Impact
Since its inception, RuralGME has made remarkable strides:
- 84 grant recipientsÌý¾±²ÔÌý38 states and one territory.
- 58 programs have already attained accreditation, representing a total of 719 resident positions.
- The program has funded nearly one in four rural residencies nationwide.
This national recognition is a testament to the extraordinary efforts of the RuralGME team and its numerous partners. At the heart of this success are the Rural Residency Planning and Development (RRPD) Program grant recipients, including Sacramento/Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program (SNFMRP) Rural Program Director Glenn Gookin, MD, PhD, who nominated RuralGME for this award.
The Role of RRPD Funding
The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) have been instrumental in the success of these rural residencies. Many grant recipients have expressed their gratitude, stating, “We would not have started this rural residency if it weren’t for this HRSA/HHS RRPD start-up funding.”
Leadership and Partnerships
Launched by ºÚÁÏÍøÂ in 2018, ºÚÁÏÍø provides overall program leadership for RuralGME. The ºÚÁÏÍøÂ Department of Family Medicine’s has a longtime history of collaborating with Piedmont Health Services (PHS), a stellar Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) to allow residents to learn and care for patients in a rural environment. RuralGME was founded by Cristy Page, MD, MPH, president of Interim CEO and Dean of ºÚÁÏÍø Health and ºÚÁÏÍø, and is directed by Family Medicine Professor Emily Hawes, PharmD, CPP.
The STFM Innovative Program Award is a well-deserved recognition of the RuralGME program’s dedication to improving rural healthcare through education and collaboration. The program’s success is a beacon of hope for rural communities, ensuring they receive the quality healthcare they deserve.
