The Applied Physical Sciences department has developed a summer series to help you learn to put these technologies to use in your lab!

 

Enhance your electronics and design skills AND support your research needs!ÌýMaker Technologies for EveryoneÌýseries offered in SS1!ÌýÌý

The Maker Technologies for Everyone curriculum is a series of 0.5- and 1.0-credit courses that provide practical Making skills at a level accessible to all students and faculty.Ìý The series is organized so that you can take courses individually as stand-alone content or together as a comprehensive overview of electronics and digital making.

APPL 112 Practical electronics for everyone (1 credit)ÌýDesign and fabrication for practical electronics circuits, including interfacing with sensors and actuators.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Taught by Mr. Collin McKinney and Mr. Matt Verber

APPL 113 LabView for Data Acquisition (1 credit)ÌýLearn how your computer can interact with sensors or instruments using LabVIEW graphical programming. This software also makes it easy to develop a professional and sophisticated user interface. Programming experience is helpful but not necessary.

APPL 114 Arduino bootcamp: A deep introduction for beginners (0.5 credit)ÌýLearn to create and program simple systems that allow coordination of real-world inputs (e.g. pushbuttons, light-level, noise) with real-world outputs (e.g. lights, sound, motion). No previous experience required.

APPL 121 3D Printing Technology and Practice (1 credit)ÌýDelve deeply in each of the major existing and developing additive manufacturing (AM) technologies.Ìý Explore the elements of design for AM, motion control and imaging technologies, materials performance and selection, and the physics of parts production.

APPL 115 Raspberry Pi bootcamp (1 credit)ÌýLearn how to use the premier microcontroller platform known as the Raspberry Pi.Ìý This is for anyone with an interest in programing, microcontrollers, and basic electronics.

How to Enroll

To enroll (Faculty and staff)ÌýFaculty and staff will need to enroll as a visiting student for summer school.  This is a straightforward process (see steps below).

1.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý

2.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Click on Visiting Students, scroll to bottom of page and click Apply Now.

3.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý There is a dropdown box once you create the application. Click Summer School Visitor.

4.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Everything else should be self-explanatory from there.   If you have questions about enrolling as a summer school visitor, please contact Erin Moseley (erin_moseley@unc.edu).

5.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý You can find the tuition waiver here:  

 

Some additional details about the process for faculty and staff.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý You need to apply to summer school before you enroll in ConnectCarolina.  It takes about 24 hours or so to receive a decision letter.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Once you receive your decision letter, it takes another 24-48 hours to matriculate to Connect Carolina so you can enroll.

·ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý There is a very helpful webinar on the summer school website if you’d like to view.
