This Spring, Carol Golin, MD, Kemi Amola, PhD, and Steve Bradley-Bull, LPC, all Motivational Interviewing specialists from the ºÚÁÏÍø Center for AIDS Research Social and Behavioral Sciences Research Core went to Charlotte, North Carolina to offer a two day training titled: Motivational Interviewing and Medication Adherence: A Person-Centered Approach to Achieve Healthier Outcomes. The workshop was initiated by the North Carolina Area Health Education Center of Charlotte and included participants in the areas of substance use, HIV counseling, community mental health, private practice, and several others in different health care settings.

The workshop focused on the fundamentals of Motivational Interviewing and how to apply them to medication adherence in a variety of settings and with diverse individuals.

Participants:

  • Discussed behavior change strategies as related to medication adherence
  • Gained knowledge about Motivational Interviewing
  • Learned specific Motivational Interviewing skills related to medication adherence and reviewed the 4 processes of Motivational Interviewing
  • Observed and practiced Motivational Interviewing skills

The group of participants were very engaged and went away from the workshop with numerous skills and insights into how Motivational Interviewing may be integrated into their work setting.
