The Pagano Award was established in 2002 to honor outstanding papers by postdoctoral fellows who are first authors of these papers. Winners are selected through a competitive process and are honored for their authorship of articles in high-impact journals.

The paper authored by Scott Rothbart, PhD, is 鈥溾 published in Nature Structural & Molecular Biology. Dr. Rothbart鈥檚 paper explores how a protein called UHRF1 鈥渞eads鈥 the histone code in a specific way to perform an important cellular function.

Dr. Rothbart is currently a postdoctoral fellow training in the lab of Dr. Brian Strahl, associate professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics. Dr. Rothbart鈥檚 research focuses on the regulation of chromatin-templated biological processes by the 鈥榟istone code鈥. Particularly, he is interested in the biochemistry and biology of a chromatin-interacting protein, UHRF1, as a bridging molecule at the interface of histone post-translational modifications and DNA methylation.
