•Trained as a pediatrician and served as a primary care clinician throughout his career

•At the time of his death, professor and vice chair of the Department of Social Medicine, professor of pediatrics, and clinical professor in the Department of Maternal and Child Health at the ºÚÁÏÍø Gillings School of Global Public Health

•From 10 years, co-director and director of the ºÚÁÏÍø SOM Preventive Medicine Residency Program and for 11 years, director of the ºÚÁÏÍø Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention

•Principle investigator for grants totaling over $12.5 million on topics including health promotion and disease prevention and the enhancement of medical school curricula in the areas of behavioral and social science. Pioneered the infusion of the humanities in the ºÚÁÏÍø SOM curriculum

•Spent several years working with community clinics in Nairobi, Kenya and served for many years on the board of directors for Carolina for Kibera, a student-run group focused on alleviating poverty in Kibera
